Every segment of its structure has a story to narrate and to honour its builder, Asaf-ud-Daulah (then the Nawab of Awadh), this shrine is also called as Asafi Imambara or Imambara-e-Asafi. One of the many stories associated with this magnificent structure narrates about the Nawab’s generosity. Awadh was hit by a severe famine and to ensure employment for both the commoner and elite who were then in need of work, the construction of Bada Imambara was initiated. Till the time famine lasted the construction continued. The main complex consists of a large, vaulted central chamber, with no beams supporting its ceiling and is revered as one of the largest arched constructions in the world! A three-dimensional labyrinth or bhool bhulaiya with dark corridors and 489 identical doorways is fascinating yet requires courage or a guide to be explored or you’ll be lost. The 60 feet tall, embellished gateway called Rumi Darwaza, the Asfi Mosque and surrounding lush gardens cannot be left unnoticed.Capture the mesmerizing beauty and glory of Bada Imambara .

Visit Hussainabad Imambara or the Chhota Imambara . It is one of the most mesmeric buildings of Lucknow. Muhammad Ali Shah, the third Nawab of Awadh, built the Imambara in 1837 that served as his own mausoleum and has the tombs of Muhammad Ali Shah and his family members. The imposing decorations at the time of special festivals have popularized it as the Palace of Lights. Its gold-plated white dome and several turrets and minarets gracefully enhance the beauty of the structure. The interiors have been decorated with exquisite chandeliers which were exclusively brought from Belgium. The walls are enriched with Arabic calligraphy. The royal structure is the creation of thousands of workers who worked on this project to gain respite from famine.

Outside the building you will find a clock tower called Satkhanda or the ‘Tower of Seven Storeys’. The Satkhanda was built by Muhammad Ali Shah and has only four storeys because of the abeyance in the construction at the death of Ali Shah. Just opposite the entrance lies the Naubat Khana, a place where music is played three times a day in honour of the dead. A visit to this majestic structure is truly an overwhelming experience!

After this proceed for lunch . Place shall be advised to you for your lunch . Enjoy the Avadhi cuisines in your lunch .

After this visit Shah Najaf Imambara. Built by Nawab Ghazi-ud Din Haider (1814-1827) at a place called Paltan Ghat on the banks of the river Gomti, this Imambara serves as a mausoleum to the Nawab’s own mortal remains. The mausoleum stands midst a plush green garden that adds stars to the beauty of this place. Double-arched doors serve as an entrance to the interior of the Imambara. Most of the Imambaras in the city of Lucknow have domes as a part of their architectural feature but the dome of this Imambara is quite unique in its own way. The hall of the Imambara is decorated with majestic chandeliers. It not only houses the tomb of Nawab but also his wives. Mausoleum of Nawab Ghazi-ud Din Haider is adorned with silver while that of his European wife Mubarak Mahal has work done with silver and gold. Legend says the roof of the Imambara was constructed with 9 mann gold rods. It also houses wooden and bamboo Tazia which are carried during Moharram.

The “Shah Najaf Imambara is a replica of Hazrat Ali’s burial place at Najaf in Iraq. As Nawab Ghazi-ud Din Haider was a devotee of Caliph Hazrat Ali, who was also known as Shah-e Najaf (Lord of Najaf), so the building was named after him.” The holy mausoleum was built by the Nawab for the interment of his own mortal remains.
